How I Fell Into the Advertising Business
A True Confession
Hi Friend and Colleague,
Emette Massey here. This is not going to be your typical "about" or "bio" page. I tend to be a bit more unconventional . . . in most things. And that includes how I run my consulting business.
While considering what exactly to say, I decided to share a story about how I got into this crazy but fun business in the first place. And strangely enough, it reminded me of my basic philosophy in life.
So, buckle your seat belts and hold on . . .
Warning: Sharks Ahead!
Have you ever been bitten by a "shark"? No, no not the ones swimming around in the ocean. I'm talking about the two-legged, vertical walking kind.
Yeah, it sucks right? I don't recommend it to anyone!
I grew up in a time where a person's word was their bond. Solid as oak. No fancy "agreements, contracts or legalese" documents to allow folks to 'weasel out' of doing what they said they would do.
I'm here to report that I've been bitten by more two-legged sharks that I care to admit to. I guess I like to see the good in folks or maybe I'm just too trusting when dealing with folks. Nevertheless, I've come away scarred from dealings in the past and here to tell about it.
We have all been hoodwinked, swindled, or just plain ripped off . . . at least once in our lifetime. And we all know the pain that it brings.
So I decided a LONG time ago that I'd do my very best to keep my word, give folks more than they bargained for and leave them will a good feeling about doing business with me. And doing what I love makes it all the more easy.
The Road Rash Years
I ain't gonna lie . . . despite all the pitfalls I've encountered, I've been lucky . . . damn lucky. It's been a great ride these past 18+ years. Yes, I've skint my elbows, bruised my soul and fallen on my face numerous times during my travels down the enchanted marketing road, but I've had more than my fair share of success and all the glory that goes with it. I've all the good fortune of great mentorship from some of the finest and most brilliant marketing minds literally on the planet.
The lessons I've learned have been field tested and proven time and time again. In fact, I use these exact strategies and lessons in my own personal businesses before ever hanging out my "consulting" shingle. And the learning never stops. I still to this day openly and willingly learn from anyone who has a solid lesson to teach. It just all part of how I play the game called business .
Yes, mentor-ship and study certainly cut the learning curve but experience has paved the way. I still enjoy creating my own marketing projects, research the marketplace, write all the advertising copy and run the business. I wouldn't have it any other way!
